  I knew Derek as a young teen and later worked with him at the pool, where I found a friend who could laugh at himself, was as loyal as anyone I've ever known, and had the sweetest smile. Many summers were spent at the Selah pool together, along with a fun crew of mostly boys, and I will never forget those days. I sadly lost touch with Derek as I got married and had children, but was so sad to hear of his passing. Such a good friend and co lifeguard.. rest easy, old friend. Kathy Baker Pratt

  I came to know Derek late in his life and was thrilled when he embraced his dream of getting his books published. Derek was a brilliant writer, lecturer and reseacher. Music and books were his great love and he was in his element when he talked about those things. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him. I am so glad you finally have the answers now that you looked for during your lifetime. Rest in peace Derek. I will look for you on the other side.
