Obituary For Doris Irene Olmstead

Doris Irene Dunn was born July 9th 1934 to Ross and Eva Dunn in Deadwood,South Dakota and passed away the morning of December 17th 2025.
Doris graduated from Deadwood High School Class of 1952. She enrolled at Black Hills College in Spearfish, South Dakota. She met her future husband Marvin Olmstead, who was also attending Black Hills College after just being discharged from the Navy. They were married November 25th 1954. In the fall of 1955 the couple moved west to Pullman, Washington and Washington State University. The couple now living in Pasco Washington welcomed daughter Karen and three years later welcomed son, Mark. After four years, the family moved to Seattle for four years and then Corvallis Oregon for four years while Marvin was pursuing his PhD. In the fall of 1969, the family settled in Bellingham, Washington, with Marvin teaching at Western Washington University. It was in Bellingham that Doris, who had her teaching certificate and had been a substitute teacher over the years got her teaching career started at Whatcom middle school. She really enjoyed teaching the middle school age group. Her greatest joy was teacher her students in the Title One reading program.

Doris and Marvin spent their summers at their beloved cabins in the Black Hills of South Dakota that had been Doris‘s father‘s hunting camp. They enjoyed having many friends visit and annual family get togethers. Doris continued this tradition until her last trip to the cabins in the summer of 2022.
During retirement the couple traveled with friends on several cruises and had many other wonderful travel adventures to many wonderful destinations!
The couple joined the First Congregational church upon moving to Bellingham and had many wonderful long friendships from this special group! In the 70’s some members met 3 days a week to exercise and the class kept going for over 25 plus years. They welcomed visitors and enjoyed picnics and celebrations , what a group!

Doris is survived by daughter Karen (Al) son Mark (Karin), Grandsons, Zachary, Nathan, Matthew (Stephanie), Joshua (Nicole), Benjamin,(Ariel),step granddaughters Elizabeth and Katie and 10 great grandchildren!
Preceded in death by parents Eva and Ross Dunn, beloved husband sister Edna, special sister Betty Harvey, . A celebration of Life to be determined in the spring.
