Obituary For Dorothy Jean Ziegler

Dorothy (Lively) Ziegler

January 15, 1930 – August 10, 2025

With deep love and profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Dorothy Ziegler, who left us peacefully at the age of 95. Born in Seattle, WA, on January 15, 1930, Dorothy lived a long and beautiful life filled with joy, love, laughter, and an incredible sense of style.

Dorothy was a devoted wife to Leonard Ziegler for 56 wonderful years until his passing in 2004. Together, they raised their family in West Seattle, enthusiastically supporting their children’s involvement in Cub Scouts, Brownies, sports teams, and the PTA. They later enjoyed retirement in both Gig Harbor and Sunland Estates, WA, where they made many cherished memories.

She proudly worked for 26 years as a secretary at Seattle Boiler Works, where she was known for her dedication, sharp mind, and willingness to embrace new technologies.

She is survived by her three loving children: Steven, (Darlene, preceded her in death), Teresa (Jack Bushaw), and Michael (Brenda); her younger brother, Allen Lively; brother-in-law Robert Lehnerz; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren—all of whom she loved fiercely and spoke of with pride.

Dorothy had a vibrant spirit and was deeply involved in her community. She was a life-long volunteer at Seattle Children’s Guild (Hospital). She was also a proud member of the Burien Elks, Eagles, Aeries 1, West Seattle American Legion, Highland Park Community Club, Des Moines Yacht Club, and was a cherished resident of the Rio Verde Community in Auburn. Whether dancing, boating, camping, trying her luck at the casino, or playing a little golf in Palm Springs with her dear companion, Phil Hildebrandt, she brought warmth, laughter, and elegance to every adventure.

Known affectionately by many as ‘Cookie’, Dorothy was admired for her kindness, strength, friendliness, and impeccable fashion sense—qualities that made her unforgettable. She touched countless lives and was adored by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her legacy of love, grace, and joyful living will continue to shine through all who loved her.

Dorothy will be interned at Tacoma Memorial Cemetery with Leonard. In lieu of flowers, Dorothy asks that you consider making a donation to Seattle Children’s Hospital. The family invites you to join us in honoring Dorothy’s memory by dancing, wearing something fabulous, or spending time with those you love—just as she would have wanted.
