Obituary For Susan Lynn Smith

Susan Lynn (White) Smith
February 3, 1949 – November 23, 2025
Susan Lynn (White) Smith, born on February 3, 1949, in Aurora, Illinois, passed away peacefully at her home on November 23, 2025. She was the devoted wife of Michael John Smith for 52 wonderful years.
A true embodiment of compassion and dedication, Susan's life was a testament to her nurturing spirit. After graduating from high school in 1967, she pursued her passion for nursing at Copley School of Nursing in Aurora, where she earned her RN in 1970. As a neo-natal nurse at Copley Memorial Hospital, she provided tender care to countless newborns and their families. Her gentle touch and kind heart offered solace during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.
Susan and Michael’s love story began with an introduction by a mutual friend on the campus of Aurora College in 1971. They exchanged vows on March 31, 1973, at Grace Lutheran Church in Aurora, IL. Their union blessed them with a son Stephen and daughters Rebecca, Melissa, and Jessica. The enduring love and the family they built together stand as a testament to their remarkable dedication and bond.
From the earliest days of motherhood, Susan delighted in sewing dresses and costumes for her daughters, infusing each piece with love and creativity. Her sewing skills extended beyond clothing; she also dabbled in cross-stitch, creating intricate designs that showcased her artistic flair. Baking was another of her passions— the rhythm of kneading, the rising, and warm aroma of fresh baked bread wafting through the house created a lasting sense of comfort and home for Susan and her family. Her garden also flourished under her care; it was a sanctuary filled with vibrant colors and fragrant blooms where both birds and children could let their own songs be heard.
Susan loved a road trip. The family would pack up and explore scenic routes or bask in the sun on the Washington coast. These adventures created moments and connections of laughter and togetherness that would last lifetimes.
She also nurtured her literary side by writing poetry and other creative writings, weaving words together like threads in her beloved sewing projects.
As life unfolded, Susan’s passions expanded to include genealogy—a pursuit that became a profound journey into her family's past. She dedicated herself to tracing lineage and reconnecting with her roots, turning what began as a hobby into an enlightening exploration of self-discovery. Through meticulous research, Susan uncovered the rich histories of ancestors long forgotten, breathing life into their stories and forging deeper connections to her heritage. Among the most significant relationships she cultivated during this journey was with her nephew, Dan Neill, and his wife Annie.
Susan is survived by her beloved husband Michael Smith; daughters Rebecca (Tim) Wheeler, Melissa Canfield, and Jessica (Nick) Kiger; five grandchildren: Kory Essig, Cedar Van Engen, Victoria (Aidan) Nestor, Spencer McCoy, and Kimber McCoy; as well as her great-grandchild Abraham Nestor. She is also mourned by her sisters Judith Neill, Judith (Paul) Slimko, Barbara (TJ) Zane, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Susan in death were her parents and son Stephen Michael Smith.
Susan's legacy extends far beyond her professional accomplishments or personal relationships. She inspired those around her to practice true generosity—not just with material possessions but with time, attention, and love. Her life’s message encouraged us to invest wholeheartedly in what matters most: listening sincerely, being present without distraction, and showing kindness freely. Her spirit of generosity will continue to resonate deeply with all who knew her.
During the final days of Susan’s life, the family was touched by the support and kindness shown by dedicated individuals. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to nurse Megan for her kindness and compassionate care, as well as to Mary Totten and Sara Segebartt, whose presence and support provided immeasurable comfort. Their collective efforts will always be remembered and cherished by the family.
In honor of Susan's memory, the family will host a private Celebration of Life service for friends and loved ones.
In honoring Susan, we recognize a woman who balanced nurturing her family with creative expression and lifelong learning—a testament to the beauty of living fully and passionately.

One of my cherished memories I was around 11 or 12 we were sitting in her apartment on the floor talking and laughing, eating potato chips and French onion dip. That became our thing we made sure every time we were together we ate them. When I got the call of her passing I made sure I had some. Love my sister and will miss her!
